Bernhardi (1912) - Komödie der Verführung (1924)Most
people only live on the middle floor of their home, set up with all mod
cons, where they're warm and snug. They rarely go down into the lower
rooms, where they could encounter gooseflesh-inducing ghosts. They
rarely climb the tower where they could suffer vertigo from looking down
or gazing into the distance. Of course, some people love to dwell in
the cellar, because they feel better in the dark that makes them shiver
than in the light where they must face their responsibilities. Others
love to climb the tower for an unbroken view over a boundless vastness
that is for ever unreachable. But the most unfortunate people are those
who run endlessly back and forth between the cellar and the tower,
forever on the stairs, giving up to ruin and dust the rooms that are
actually meant to be lived in. from: Arthur Schnitzler, Aphorismen
und Betrachtungen
