The STAN actors create a play, just the four of them, without any outsiders. The last time this happened was in 1997, with Private Lives .

... a play which would make people laugh when their seaside summer holidays were spoiled by the rain and they came into the theatre to get dry before trudging back to their landladies. this seemed to me as worthwhile a reason for writing a play as any ... / ... beware of the writer who puts forward his concern for you to embrace, who leaves you in no doubt of his worthiness, his usefulness, his altruism, who declares that his heart is in the right place, and ensures that it can be seen in full view ...

ayckbourn / pinter

of/niet was part of the selection for the 2006 edition of the Dutch theatre festival TF-1.

Excerpt from the jury report:
A terrific performance: the public can be assured they'll have a wonderful night out. In this traditional comedy about infidelity and adultery the misunderstandings pile up, accompanied by a huge wink, but without overwhelming the tragic undertones. This is high-grade comedy, technically proficient and performed with unparalleled pleasure.
The framework of Pinter's play gives it a vicious edge. After the belly laughs we're faced with a dreadfully tough question: is this the type of theatre we wish on ourselves? Would we rather laugh at a simple Ayckbourn? Or do we want a kind of theatre that asks forthright questions about the spirit of the times? Is a combination possible? Or not?

tg STAN speelt "of/niet"

Not since Private Lives have all four members of the STAN group (Jolente De Keersmaeker, Sara de Roo, Damiaan De Schrijver and Frank Vercruyssen) been together on stage. Of/niet ( or/not ) is not only a reunion of the actors but also of their interests. The production embraces their love of comedy ( Poquelin ), their fascination with discommunication ( 'zien en zien'/’see and see’ ), political commitment ( Vraagzucht/Questionism ) and all that with a metatheatre nod ( vandeneede... ). Because of course when it comes to ‘appearances’, the same applies to theatre. The STANners have a wonderful time in this web of misunderstandings, as does the audience. The audience may laugh, but the situations that arise are painfully recognizable. STAN’s question is: do we laugh back at the picture we see of ourselves? Or not?
of/niet , De Morgen, Liv Laveyne, 26/04/06

The energy and gusto STAN displays here, together with the obvious enjoyment they derive from acting, are amazing. Of/niet shows that for the time being at least a well placed misunderstanding is still the number-one of comedy. So a mountain of misunderstandings, cross-fertilized with a dash of Pinter, equals pure STAN: flawlessly executed, extremely witty and totally compelling.
MisunderSTANding , Knack, Wim Smets, 03/05/06

Dramatically speaking this is an obvious combination: Pinter and Ayckbourn are hard to match when it comes to analysing the hypocrisy of the (English) middle-classes. What is more, both Party Time and Relatively Speaking are about appearances.
STAN’s regular group of actors – Damiaan De Schrijver, Frank Vercruyssen, Jolente De Keersmaeker and Sara De Roo – perform this comedy with a highly entertaining and clever mix of seriousness and irony. Comedy at a high level, perfectly poised between technical skill and a huge wink.
Of/niet entertaining and clever , de Volkskrant, Hein Janssen, 06/05/06

If your friends don't like the theatre, take them to see STAN and they will surely change their mind. At first sight of/niet , an outlandish performance staged without even a semblance of a set, doesn't seem like much. But quite soon these actors' seemingly aloof manner, their ability to make us believe they're discovering the text along with us, and their unflagging cynicism produce the best possible result: peals of laughter all around. And the actors' performances are the final straw: Damiaan De Schrijver, a bearded colossus, is a master of the double entendre. Frank Vercruyssen gives a brilliant performance as the anxious type. Sara De Roo's high spirits are infectious. And Jolente De Keersmaeker (Anne Teresa's sister) exhibits an awesome versatility. It's irresistible. After this your friends won't be able to do without!
