Quartett is a 1999 collaboration between dance company Rosas and TG Stan. The performance is based on the eponymous text by German author Heiner Müller, who found inspiration in the 1782 classic Les liaisons dangereuses, written by French courtier Choderlos de Laclos. Laclos’ novella opens with the words “A salon before the French revolution / a bunker following world war three”. A man and a woman attempt to gain amorous affection from each other, while their outside world is on the verge of collapse, (or, has collapsed already). The confrontation between the masculine and the feminine, however, equally concerns a confrontation between the powers of persuasion and the physical threat of movement. Quartett was made by Frank Vercruyssen, Cynthia Loemij, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Jolente De Keersmaeker. Actor Frank Vercruyssen (Stan) and dancer Cynthia Loemij (Rosas) share the stage.

“An equally sober as impressive performance, with an emphasis on the masterly and dark text of Müller...Cynthia Loemij and Frank Vercruyssen are worthy of each other as performers: the graceful Loemij, opposite Vercruyssen as an almost stagnant silhouette” - De Morgen

“It is above all an examination of the possibilities possessed by both the disciplines of dance and acting to bring to light things that are in sensu strictu inexpressible.” - Ballett International - Tanz Actuell

“Actor and dancer, word and gesture, gradually they coincide, like Valmont and Montreuil. Doing so, the sisters De Keersmaeker demonstrate that text and dance can very well go together and that Müllers Quartett is an exemplary vehicle of their intentions.” - De Volkskrant

“Unspoken feelings seem to have become visible in dance. In an abstract connection between text theater and dance, the makers succeed in translating the universality of Müller's text in a transparent manner.” - Veto

“Impressive, sober but sharp theatre. For those who love pure theatre.” - Het Nieuwsblad

“The final part of the piece is particularly impressive. Dancer and actor come together and their slow, simultaneous dance forms the striking ultimate scene of the performance.” - De Standaard
